Plain-English answers to the questions homeowners, builders and property owners ask before they choose blinds, shades, shutters or drapery.
Call us today615-357-7797Choosing Blinds, Shades or Shutters
Blinds use slats you tilt to steer light. Shades use fabric or a honeycomb structure that raises and lowers. Shutters are hinged louvered panels built into the window. Each has strengths, and many homes use a mix by room.
Our Window Treatment Style Quiz and Treatment Comparison Tool help you narrow it down, and we confirm what works when we visit.
Light Levels: Sheer to Blackout
Sheer fabrics keep the view and soften sun. Light-filtering fabrics add privacy and glow. Room-darkening fabrics dim a room, and blackout treatments block most light. Solar screens cut glare while keeping the view.
Our Sun and Light Planner shows how the sun hits your window so you can choose the right level.
Privacy by Day and by Night
Some fabrics give daytime privacy but become see-through at night when lights are on. Opaque fabrics, linings, shutters, top-down bottom-up shades and layers keep you private at every hour.
We help you plan privacy window by window, especially on street-facing and ground-floor windows.
Inside and Outside Mounts
An inside mount sits within the window frame for a tidy look and needs enough depth. An outside mount sits on the wall or trim and covers the frame and blocks more light.
Our Window Measuring Helper shows what each mount needs, and we confirm every measurement before ordering.
Why Measuring Matters
Custom treatments are made to your measurements, and windows are rarely perfectly square. We measure width and height in several places, check depth and note obstructions like handles and cranks.
We confirm every number with you before anything is made.
Cords, Kids and Pets
Dangling cords and loops are a hazard around children and pets. Cordless and motorized treatments remove them, and we explain safe installation and care for any remaining cords.
Cordless options are available in most styles.
Motorization and Smart Homes
Motors raise and lower shades with a remote, an app or your voice, and can follow schedules and scenes. Power can be battery, plug-in or hard-wired.
Our Motorization Planner helps you choose power and controls, and we confirm compatibility with your system.
Comfort and Energy
Cellular shades trap air at the window, solar shades cut summer sun and layered drapery adds a second barrier in winter. The right treatment helps rooms feel more comfortable.
We do not promise specific savings, because results depend on your windows and home.
Wood, Faux Wood and Fabric
Real wood is warm and light but prefers dry rooms. Faux wood handles moisture and wipes clean. Fabric shades soften light and add texture, and natural fibers add warmth.
We help you choose materials room by room.
Caring for Your Treatments
Dust gently, wipe faux wood with a damp cloth, vacuum fabric with a soft brush and avoid harsh chemicals or soaking wood. Keep cords tidy and out of reach.
Our Window Treatment Care Planner gives you a schedule and do and don’t tips.
Choosing a Window Treatment Company
Ask whether the quote includes measuring on your actual windows, what fabrics and brands you will see, how installation is handled and what happens if something is not right. Be wary of pressure and vague quotes.
A good company explains, shows you samples and gives you options.

Should I choose an inside or outside mount?
Inside mounts sit within the window frame for a tidy look. Outside mounts sit on the wall or trim and block more light. We help you decide window by window.
Are cordless blinds worth it?
Cordless and motorized options remove dangling cords, which is a safety and tidiness benefit, especially around children and pets.
What is the best treatment for a very sunny window?
Solar shades, light-filtering shades and layered drapery all help. Our Sun and Light Planner shows how the sun hits your window.
What is the best treatment for a bedroom?
Room-darkening or blackout shades, often paired with drapery. Side channels and overlapping panels reduce light at the edges.
Can you motorize shades I already have?
Sometimes. We inspect them and tell you honestly whether a motor makes sense or a new motorized shade is better.
